Agartala, 18th October 2025: Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty condemned two recent incidents of sexual violence and murder, calling them “among the most horrific in the state’s history.”
Referring to the rape and murder of an infant in Panisagar and the brutal killing of a 72-year-old woman in Taidu on October 16, Chakraborty alleged that the accused in both cases were “active workers of the ruling alliance.” He criticized the police for failing to act swiftly, noting that “it was the local people who caught the perpetrator and handed him over after a public beating.”
“These are no longer isolated incidents. Such crimes have become disturbingly routine in Tripura. There are no words left to condemn them,” Chakraborty said in a press communiqué today
He accused the BJP-led government of fostering impunity through its nexus of political and financial power. “Those in power have become so emboldened that even after admitting to crimes, they continue to hold ministerial positions without shame,” he said.
Chakraborty also raised concerns over a recent drug seizure at Jirania railway station, where narcotics worth Rs 10 crore were allegedly imported from Delhi under the name of a logistics firm. “In a region where even a leaf doesn’t move without permission, how did two wagons of drugs arrive unnoticed?” he asked.
Calling for a united front, Chakraborty appealed to “all peace-loving, democratic citizens” to join a resistance movement. “If we fail to act now, these forces will become even more untouchable,” he warned. He urged conscientious police officers to uphold their constitutional duties without delay, saying, “It’s time to protect the dignity of your uniform.”
