Agartala, 27th February 2024: Former Pradesh Congress president Piyush Kanti Biswas rejoined the party on Tuesday after meeting the central leadership in Delhi on Monday. He was welcomed by the All India Congress Committee and given a national role in the party. State Congress president Asish Kumar Saha was also present at the occasion.
Biswas, who had left the Congress and formed his own party, said he took a timely decision to return to the fold. He hoped that the Congress would be able to strengthen its organization in Tripura and challenge the ruling BJP in the next parliamentary elections. He also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of destroying democracy and misusing power in the country.
However, the Congress also faced a setback as 20 activists and supporters, including Minority Department chairman Jaidul Hossain and leader Ratan Das, quit the party and held a press conference at Agartala Press Club. They alleged that the state Congress president Anfrit was involved in corruption, nepotism and immoral activities. They claimed that they would join another national party soon, which was speculated to be saffron camp.
