Agartala, 4th July 2025: A vehicle carrying phensedyl cough syrup worth several lakhs of rupees overturned near the BSF camp between the Bishalgarh Court and the SDPO office in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident took place around 2 a.m. when a DI vehicle bearing registration number TR-07A-1842, reportedly en route to Kamalnagar lost control and overturned. The vehicle was allegedly part of a two-car convoy smuggling the contraband, a black Scorpio SUV with suspected smugglers was reportedly seen circling the Bishalgarh police station hours before the incident.
Eyewitnesses claim that before law enforcement could arrive, the occupants of the overturned vehicle swiftly retrieved several cartons of phensedyl and fled the scene in the Scorpio. The swift escape and delayed police response have led to allegations of prior tip-off from within the police station. The SDPO, whose office is adjacent to the crash site, reached the location shortly after, though no arrests have been made.
Sources suggest the phensedyl consignment was owned by individuals from Vishalgarh and Motinagar, while the DI vehicle’s owner reportedly hails from the Taksapara area of Bishramganj.
This incident has spotlighted a wider concern over the rampant smuggling of the banned cough syrup through the Bishalgarh bypass, allegedly with routine police indifference. Locals allege that vehicles smuggling phensedyl frequently bypass checkpoints—particularly at Uttam Bhakta Chowmuhani—using insider information to evade interception. It is also claimed that upon accidents or seizures, smugglers often negotiate directly with officers to recover both drugs and vehicles.
