Police halt TET qualifiers’ march to CM’s residence over recruitment demand

Date:

Agartala, 10th August 2026:  Police on Monday stopped a group of candidates who had qualified in the 2024 Tripura Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) as they attempted to march towards Chief Minister Manik Saha’s residence, demanding simultaneous recruitment of all successful candidates.

The protesters alleged that they have been repeatedly approaching the Teachers’ Recruitment Board, Tripura (TRBT), the Education Department and the Elementary Education Department for nearly two years through deputations and demonstrations, but their demand has yet to receive a satisfactory response.

Questioning the prolonged recruitment delay, the candidates pointed to the shortage of teachers in several schools across the state. They argued that appointments should be expedited when vacancies are reportedly affecting the functioning of educational institutions.

The protesters said around 50,000 candidates appeared for the latest TET, of whom 1,856 remained eligible after the verification process. They expressed concern that the delay could deprive several successful candidates of government jobs as they approach the upper age limit. According to them, around 20–25 candidates have already crossed the age of 40, while several others are on the verge of reaching the limit.

The candidates stressed that they were not seeking any relaxation in examination standards or marks, but only appointment after successfully clearing the TET and subsequent verification.

They also said the prolonged uncertainty has affected their livelihoods. Many had depended on private tuition while awaiting recruitment, but claimed that even tutoring opportunities have declined as parents fear they may leave once appointed to government schools.

The protesters criticised the police action, saying they were prevented from reaching the Chief Minister’s residence despite seeking to submit their demands peacefully.

They appealed to the government to expedite the recruitment process and ensure regular teacher recruitment to address both unemployment among qualified candidates and the shortage of teachers in schools.
