Agartala, 15th December 2024:   Police lathi-charged a moving bike in the Parimal Chowmuhani area of Charilam leading to a severe accident on Sunday afternoon. The bike was rode by a helmetless rider, lost control and collided with a bicycle injuring both the bike rider and the cyclist. Both injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment at GB Hospital.

It is reported that, the police had been conducting routine checks in the Parimal Chowmuhani area. During the check, a bike rider identified as Gobinda Debnath, was passing through without wearing a helmet. A police officer struck the speeding bike with a lathi, causing Debnath to lose balance and crash into an oncoming bicycle. The impact left both Debnath and the cyclist injured.

Locals have expressed outrage over the police’s actions, blaming the accident on the officer’s decision to hit the moving bike. “This accident could have been avoided. The police should have found a safer way to enforce helmet laws,” said a concerned resident.

The fire department was immediately notified, and firefighters rushed to the scene to rescue the injured. Both individuals were initially taken to Bishalgarh sub-divisional hospital but were later shifted to GB Hospital due to the severity of their injuries.
