Agartala, June 21, 2023: TIPRA Students’ Federation staged a ‘Raj Bhavan Abhiyan’ demanding ‘Roman Script’ in Kokborok language. However, police stopped the procession at Circuit house area here today.

The TSF has been persistently demanding the adoption of the Roman script for Kokborok since 1968, emphasizing the need to meet the linguistic preferences of the people of the state.

Expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of attention, TSF President Samrat Debbarma, who was present at the rally, declared that the agitation would persist until the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) boards allow the use of the Roman script in the Kokborok language. In anticipation of potential disturbances, the police made extensive preparations in the Circuit House area. This cautious approach stems from recent incidents that have taken place in the city during similar movements.

It is worthy to mention here that a clash between the TISF and the police had taken place at the Circuit House area, resulting in the police employing baton charges to restore order. Unfortunately, this confrontation led to the injury of 15 individuals and disrupted the daily lives of ordinary citizens. Consequently, law enforcement agencies are determined to prevent any untoward incidents, deploying both police personnel and paramilitary forces to maintain a peaceful environment in the city.
