Agartala, 26th November 2025: Dharmanagar turned into a battleground today following violent clashes between political groups, with both the CPI(M) and the Congress accusing the ruling party of orchestrating attacks. At least 10 to 12 workers from the CPI(M) and Congress were injured, three of them critically. The town remains tense.
The unrest traces back to late yesterday night, when alleged acts of vandalism at the Dharmanagar District Congress office sparked outrage. Today morning, the Congress held a protest march, after which party workers staged a road blockade in front of the district office. They withdrew the blockade only after police assured swift action and the arrest of the culprits.
Soon after, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) began a separate blockade at the same location, demanding the immediate arrest of district Youth Congress leader Jahangir Hossain, accused of assaulting ABVP leader Aniket Deb the previous afternoon.
District Congress president Digbijoy Chakraborty alleged that around midday, hundreds of BJP-backed miscreants stormed the Congress office, launched a violent attack, and vandalized property. One Congress worker was seriously injured and is undergoing treatment at the district hospital. Chakraborty claimed the attack happened in front of the police, yet authorities took no meaningful action. He also criticized the state government, questioning the Chief Minister’s silence whenever opposition members come under attack.
Around the same time, the CPI(M) took out a protest rally from its party office and marched toward the District Magistrate’s office, where they held a street meeting. Tensions escalated when a BJP procession from Kalidighi reached the area, leading to a face-off. Within moments, pushing, shoving, and violent clashes erupted. CPI(M) leaders alleged that BJP supporters launched an unprovoked attack on their rally. Several leaders—including state committee member Amitava Dutta and district leader Ratan Roy—were injured and later hospitalized in a bloodied state.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Jayanta Karmakar, Additional SP Komal Debbarma, and District SP Avinash Rai rushed to the location. Additional forces were deployed to bring the situation under control.
Local residents blamed the administration for severe negligence. Despite political tensions since Tuesday, police allowed multiple parties to hold rallies on the same route, without altering the road map or imposing necessary restrictions. Eyewitnesses also claimed that miscreants carrying party flags assaulted opposition workers and vandalized CPI(M) publicity vehicles while police stood by as spectators.
Fear gripped residents as shops and markets abruptly shut down, reviving memories of the violent 1990s. As of the time of reporting, no arrests had been made.
Tripura Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha condemned the attacks, calling them “extremely shameful,” especially on Constitution Day. He said the Congress office—regarded by party workers as a sacred space—had been desecrated with violence while the police remained silent. Despite this, Congress workers attempted to resist the attackers.
