Agartala, 13th July 2024:  After the death of 21-year-old Parameshwar Reang, unrest erupted in Gandacherra sub-division on Friday night with miscreants vandalizing, looting and setting fire to several homes. In response, Article 144 was imposed and there has been widespread condemnation of the violence. Following these events, Amra Bangali party leaders and member took to the streets in Agartala on Saturday.

Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhary, former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha criticized the government’s handling of the situation. Meanwhile, Tipra Matha leader Pradyot Kishore Debbarman visited the grieving family of the deceased.

Reports indicate that after Parameshwar’s body was returned home, tensions escalated between different community factions. A long protest ensued outside the Amra Bengali party office, where party secretary Gouranga Rudrapal explained that Parameshwar had suffered electrocution during a festive event on July 7 and died at GB Hospital after being referred from the local facility.

The unrest led to targeted attacks prompting many families to flee to nearby forests with about 50 families severely affected. Those responsible for the violence reportedly threatened further attacks on affected communities with claims that the BJP government has favored past perpetrators of communal violence since 2018.

Jitendra Chaudhury stated that he had requested police intervention, but initial attempts to control the situation failed, leading to discussions with higher authorities for better management. The Left Front condemned the violence and called for immediate action to prevent further harm and restore peace.

Calls for governmental accountability have been made, particularly regarding the planning of the recent fair, which was allegedly exploited for unrest. Demonstrations have continued, with demands for compensation for victims, government jobs for Parameshwar’s family, and enhanced security in the area.

Tipra Motha’s Pradyot Kishore Debbarman urged unity among communities promising support for Parameshwar’s family. Meanwhile, he criticized leaders who failed to support affected families emphasizing the need for responsible governance and community harmony.
