Pradyot warns Centre on NE’s security, Calls for Assertive Stance Against Bangladesh

Agartala, 1st April 2025:   Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the Royal Scion and founder of the Tipra Motha Party, has strongly criticized the recent remarks of Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, regarding the Northeast region of India. Expressing serious concerns over Yunus’ statements, Pradyot has urged the Indian government to shift its diplomatic approach and engage from a position of strength.

In a widely circulated video, Yunus described the Northeast as a “landlocked region of India” with no access to the ocean. Reacting sharply to this claim, Pradyot labeled Yunus’ remarks as a veiled threat to the region’s security and stability.

“Muhammad Yunus made these comments in China, indirectly questioning what India and the Northeast would do if Bangladesh were to deepen its ties with Beijing. This is a clear challenge. India must rethink its strategy and respond assertively,” Pradyot stated.

He criticized India’s current handling of Bangladesh’s interim government, emphasizing that the political landscape in the neighboring country is unlikely to change significantly. While acknowledging India’s historical ties with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s family and the current alliance with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he warned that beyond these personal connections, Bangladesh’s stance may not always align with India’s interests.

Pradyot highlighted the plight of indigenous communities in Bangladesh, including the Chakma, Manipuri, Garo, and Khasi populations, asserting that they have long faced challenges. He also recalled the historical injustices in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the continued struggles of indigenous people in Bangladesh.

“History has shown us the consequences of underestimating threats. From Noakhali to Sylhet, we have seen repeated instances of persecution. Now, Muhammad Yunus is making statements that cannot be ignored. India must have a contingency plan,” he cautioned.

Warning about the strategic vulnerability of the Chicken’s Neck corridor, Pradyot called for a firm response from India.

“The Northeast cannot afford complacency. The words of Muhammad Yunus are not mere rhetoric; they signify a looming challenge. As Tiprasa, we stand prepared. The Tiprasa people in Bangladesh also support our cause. We will not hesitate if called upon. India must act decisively,” he concluded.
