Agartala, 6th September 2026 : A 24-year-old pregnant woman allegedly died along with her unborn child after she was reportedly unable to receive timely specialist medical care at hospitals in Unakoti district, triggering serious concerns over the availability of doctors at government healthcare facilities.
The deceased has been identified as Nurjahanara Begum, a resident of the state. According to her family members, she was admitted to Kailashahar’s R.G.M. Sub-Divisional Hospital on Saturday afternoon after experiencing labour pain.
The family alleged that although her condition was critical, the attending doctor, identified as Chiranjeet, did not take adequate steps to conduct the delivery or provide timely intervention. Her condition reportedly deteriorated during the early hours of Sunday.
The family further alleged that she was subsequently referred to Unakoti District Hospital. However, after reaching the district hospital, they were reportedly informed that no specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology was available there on Saturday and Sunday.
With her condition continuing to worsen, the woman was eventually referred to IGM Hospital in Agartala. However, she reportedly died after suffering prolonged labour pain. Her unborn child also could not be saved.
The incident has raised questions over the availability of specialist doctors at a district-level hospital, particularly during weekends and government holidays. The family has alleged that the absence of an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist at a critical time contributed to the deaths.
The bereaved family has demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and urged the authorities to take appropriate action if negligence is established.
They have also appealed to Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha to intervene and ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over emergency maternal healthcare services in government hospitals and the need to ensure that critical patients receive timely treatment regardless of weekends or holidays.
