Agartala, 19th December 2025: The West Tripura district committees of the Tripura Khet Majdoor Union and Gramin Shramik Union staged a protest rally here today, calling for the withdrawal of the controversial ‘G Ram G’ Bill.
The rally marched through several streets of the capital before concluding in front of City Centre, where a public meeting was held.
Tripura Khetmajur Union secretary Shyamal Dey addressed the gathering, sharply criticizing the central government. He alleged that the government has been steadily reducing allocations under MGNREGA, bringing hardship to workers. The current allocation, he said, has been cut to Rs 85,839 crore.
Dey further accused the BJP-led government of acting under the directives of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) by removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from MGNREGA and pushing the ‘J Ramji’ Bill through Parliament in what he termed an unconstitutional manner.
He reminded the audience that Rabindranath Tagore had bestowed the title of “Mahatma” on Gandhi, who was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, an RSS ideologue. “Replacing Gandhi’s name is a deliberate political move,” Dey charged.
Criticizing the government’s promise of 100 days of work under MGNREGA, he said workers have been deceived with empty assurances. “This government has turned its commitments into mere slogans while workers continue to suffer,” he added.
