Agartala, 4th April 2026: A tragic incident occurred in the Ramkrishnapur ADC Village area of Mungia Kami when a wild tusker attacked and killed a 70-year-old woman in her home around 2:00 AM on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Monimala Debbarma.
The news of her death sparked outrage among the local residents, who immediately took to the streets in protest. In a dramatic demonstration, villagers and family members blocked the Assam-Agartala National Highway at Mungiakami market, causing significant disruption to traffic.
Reports suggest that the situation escalated further when the local forest beat office was vandalized by some angry individuals. Additionally, two journalists were reportedly attacked while covering the incident.
When Sub-Divisional Forest Officer Dhiren Koloi arrived at the scene, he was confronted by the agitated crowd. Local leaders from the Tipra Motha Party intervened, escorting him to their office for safety. Later, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apoorva Krishna Chakraborty also visited the site and attempted to calm the situation by speaking with the residents. During an interaction, when he asked the deceased’s relatives for bank account details so compensation could be transferred, some women from the crowd became agitated and confronted him. He managed to leave the area safely.
The police have deployed a large contingent to control the situation, which remains tense.
