Protests erupt at Sonamura over free trade agreements

Agartala, 21st April 2025:   Protests against free trade agreements in agriculture, fisheries, and dairy took center stage across the Sonamura subdivision this morning. Organized by the Leftist group All India Krishak Sabha, demonstrations included the burning of effigies of US Vice President David Bench and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A large gathering of workers, supporters, and leaders assembled outside the CPIM party office in Sonamura. Gouranga Thakurta, Secretary of the Sepahijala District Committee of All India Krishak Sabha addressed the media stating, “The country is being taken to the brink of destruction during Narendra Modi’s tenure. We strongly protest against it.”

Leftist MLA Shyamal Chakraborty, subdivision president Suresh Das, secretary Abdul Karim, farmer leader Mizan Mia, labor leader Ahidur Rahman and Adhir Bhowmik joined the protest alongside other activists.

Similar demonstrations unfolded at the Kathalia CPIM party office, where senior farmer leader Nanipal spoke to the crowd. Leaders from various mass organizations, including Nakul Malla, Kaushik Chanda, and Paltan Dey were also present.
