Agartala, 14th June 2025: Residents and guardians of Latu Gaon Senior Basic School have voiced strong concerns over the alleged illegal operation of the School Management Committee (SMC) for the past three years. Protesters claim that the committee, reportedly formed without proper authorization, has been misappropriating government funds intended for school development.
Despite growing doubts among locals, the school principal had remained silent on the matter. However, mounting pressure from parents and panchayat members led him to address the issue publicly for the first time on Saturday. “Yes, I acknowledge that the current SMC committee is not properly formed,” the principal admitted. “Steps will be taken soon to reconstitute it in accordance with regulations.”
The controversy escalated further following the recent hiring of two nannies, allegedly facilitated through collusion between the committee and the principal. Local residents insist that any legitimate SMC formation must include at least six to seven guardians whose children are enrolled in the school. Additionally, they demand that the chairman of the SMC must also be a parent of a student.
Expressing frustration, a guardian at the protest stated, “Not a single member of the existing committee has children studying here. How can they represent us and make decisions for our school?”
Following intense pressure from the community, the principal was forced to concede that the current committee lacked legitimacy and pledged to restructure it in compliance with educational guidelines. The local panchayat and protesting guardians continue to demand accountability, urging authorities to investigate financial irregularities and ensure transparency in school governance.
