Agartala, 4th August 2026 : The Northeast Bharatiya Private Transport Mazdoor Mahasangh has raised concerns over the existing permit policy for electric autos in Tripura, alleging that the absence of a clear regulatory framework is creating confusion and uncertainty among drivers.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, organisation leader Asim Dutta said the transport sector was witnessing different approaches towards conventional autos and electric autos, resulting in inconsistencies in the permit system.
According to Dutta, while specific permit-related regulations are in place for conventional autos, there is still no clearly defined policy governing electric autos. He said the situation has left many e-auto drivers uncertain about the rules they are required to follow.
Dutta claimed that the organisation had repeatedly submitted memoranda and approached the Transport Department through deputations, seeking a clear resolution to the issue. However, he alleged that no visible steps had been taken so far to address their concerns.
The transport workers’ organisation stressed that regulations governing the transport sector should be applied uniformly, irrespective of the type of vehicle. Dutta argued that maintaining separate or unclear rules for different categories of autos was unfair and could lead to further confusion within the sector.
The organisation has called for the immediate formulation of a transparent, uniform and clearly defined permit policy for electric autos. It said such a framework would provide certainty to drivers while improving transparency and discipline in Tripura’s transport system.
The demand comes amid the growing presence of electric vehicles in the state’s urban transport sector.
