Radhanagar Battalion pays tribute to martyrs with solemn wreath laying ceremony

Date:

Agartala, 14th June 2026:   Assam Rifles organised a solemn wreath laying ceremony at Radhanagar on June 13, 2026, to pay homage to the nine brave soldiers of 28 Assam Rifles who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty on June 13, 2001.

The ceremony was held in remembrance of the personnel who lost their lives while serving the nation during a counter-insurgency operation. On June 13, 2001, at around 9:30 am, a patrol party of 28 Assam Rifles comprising one Junior Commissioned Officer and nine Other Ranks was tasked with evacuating a seriously ill patient. Near Namdang Gollierly, the patrol came under attack when suspected militants ambushed them from concealed and well-prepared positions, opening fire at close range and launching grenade attacks.

Despite facing a sudden and intense assault, the soldiers retaliated with exceptional courage and determination. During the fierce exchange of fire, nine Other Ranks sustained serious gunshot injuries and later succumbed to their wounds, sacrificing their lives while upholding the highest traditions of duty, bravery and service.

During the wreath laying ceremony, floral tributes were paid by the Subedar Major, Adjutant, Second-in-Command and Commandant of the Battalion. The event was attended by all ranks of the unit, who gathered to honour the fallen heroes.

A two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the martyrs whose dedication, sacrifice and unwavering commitment continue to inspire generations of soldiers.

The ceremony served as a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifices of Assam Rifles personnel and reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to preserving the memory and legacy of its fallen heroes.
