Agartala, 5th November 2025: A brief spell of overnight rain has rendered a key stretch of road near Sekerkote Railway Station nearly impassable, triggering fears of accidents and forcing a near-complete halt in vehicular movement.
The affected route, which connects Sekerkote to Kanchanmala under the Kamalasagar Assembly constituency, is currently undergoing expansion as part of an Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) project. A private construction firm has been tasked with widening the road up to the railway station, a project that has been underway for several months.
To facilitate the work, truckloads of soil have been brought in from other locations and dumped along the stretch. However, Tuesday night’s unexpected rainfall soaked the freshly laid earth, turning the road into a slippery and unstable surface. By Wednesday morning, both two-wheelers and four-wheelers found it nearly impossible to navigate the route safely.
Local auto-rickshaw drivers have suspended services, citing life-threatening conditions. “The road has become dangerously slick. We’re not risking our lives,” said one driver, who requested anonymity.
Drivers allege that the construction company failed to implement any contingency measures to address such weather-related disruptions. As a result, daily commuters are facing severe hardship.
Residents and transport workers are now demanding immediate action. “The authorities must ensure alternative arrangements to restore safe passage for vehicles and bikes,” urged a group of auto drivers.
