Agartala, 15th July 2025: Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Union government to name a road in New Delhi after the last Maharaja of Tripura, Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. The legislator also requested the installation of a statue of the Maharaja at a prominent location in the national capital and the establishment of a replica of the Tripureswari Temple—including the Chaturdas Devta Mandir—at the Indian National Museum, Delhi.
In his letter, Debbarma highlighted the historic significance of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, who played a pivotal role in the merger of the princely state of Tripura with the Indian Union. He noted that the Merger Agreement was signed on 9th September 1949 by Maharani Kanchanprava Devi, the queen of the late Maharaja, and other representatives, and that Tripura officially became part of India on 15th October 1949.
The MLA stated that the temples of Mata Tripureswari in Udaipur and the Chaturdas Devta Mandir at Old Agartala (Khayerpur), both established by the Tripura royal dynasty, have long been revered by devotees of various communities and faiths.
Citing the example of “Tikendrajit Marg” in Delhi—named after a prince of the erstwhile Manipur kingdom—Debbarma said a similar honour should be accorded to Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur in recognition of his contributions.
“It is a long-standing demand of the people of Tripura to name a road in Delhi as ‘Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur Marg’, install a statue in his honour at a suitable junction, and set up a replica of the Tripureswari Temple along with the Chaturdas Devta Mandir inside the Indian National Museum,” the letter reads.
The Tipra Motha Party, founded by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma—grandson of Maharaja Bir Bikram—is currently in alliance with the ruling BJP in Tripura.
