Agartala, 20th January 2026: A major rural infrastructure initiative is underway in Santirbazar subdivision, where a three-kilometer road is being constructed from Gobin Bari to Anurampara using recycled plastic waste. The project costing nearly Rs 4 crore aims to improve connectivity for eight tribal hamlets in the region.
This marks the first time in South District that the Public Works Department (PWD) has adopted plastic waste technology for road construction. Executive Engineer Parb Tripura explained that the scheme under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) is designed to integrate remote and marginalized communities into the mainstream of development. “The quality and durability of roads will improve significantly through this method. Our goal, along with the government’s, is to ensure long-term improvement in public connectivity,” he said.
The inspection was attended by Santirbazar MLA Pramod Reang, PWD SDO Prabir Baran Das, BDO Bikash Sen, and engineer Amalendu Majumdar among others.
Speaking to the media personnel after the visit, MLA Pramod Reang recalled that repeated appeals by local tribal residents during the Left Front government went unanswered, forcing villagers to struggle through muddy, unpaved roads. “It is only after the BJP government came to power in 2023 that this long-awaited road project has finally materialized. The enthusiasm among local people is clearly visible,” he remarked.
The initiative has sparked optimism across the community, with residents expressing relief that decades of neglect are finally giving way to sustainable development.
