Agartala, 29th June 2026: Residents of the Subal Singh area on Monday staged a road blockade and protest, demanding the immediate repair of the severely damaged road connecting Subal Singh to Agartala. The protesters alleged that despite repeated appeals, the authorities have failed to take any effective steps to restore the road.
According to the demonstrators, the road has remained in a deplorable condition for nearly a year. The bituminous surface has almost completely worn away, leaving the road riddled with potholes and making daily travel hazardous for commuters.
The protesters said thousands of people use the road every day, including students, office-goers, patients, and traders. They claimed that schoolchildren are facing difficulties reaching their schools on time, while transporting patients to hospitals has become increasingly difficult. Local businesses are also suffering due to poor connectivity.
Residents further alleged that excessive dust generated by passing vehicles has led to respiratory and other health problems among children, the elderly, and other residents. They also pointed out that the area has been facing a long-standing drinking water shortage, which remains unresolved.
The agitating villagers accused the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the concerned authorities of ignoring the issue despite repeated representations. According to them, they have received only assurances from public representatives and officials, with no visible progress on the ground.
The protesters declared that they would continue the road blockade until they receive a written assurance from the authorities that reconstruction of the road will begin immediately.
They also questioned the quality of construction and maintenance, asking how a major road funded with public money could become virtually unusable within a year of its construction. The residents demanded accountability from both NHIDCL and the state government, stating that development claims would hold meaning only when people have access to safe and motorable roads.
The protest has now put pressure on NHIDCL, the concerned government departments, and the state administration to respond swiftly and address the long-standing grievances of the local residents.
