Agartala, 8th March 2025 : Facing a prolonged drinking water crisis, elderly residents from wards 2, 4, and 5 of the Kailashahar Municipal Council gathered at the Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) office today, demanding urgent intervention. The affected citizens claim they have been receiving irregular water supply for the past one and a half years, despite repeated appeals to authorities.
Retired government employee Sameer Biswas, one of the protesters, expressed frustration over the lack of water availability. “Water is not supplied in the morning or afternoon, and officials are often absent when we visit the office. The situation has become unbearable,” he said.
Responding to the complaints, the Assistant Engineer and Junior Engineer of the DWS assured residents that efforts were underway to restore normal water supply within a few days. However, concerns remain over the financial disputes between municipal authorities and the DWS.
According to sources, the Kailashahar Municipal Council has allegedly failed to clear water bills totaling Rs 32 lakh over the past two years, despite continuing to collect water taxes from residents. This financial mismanagement, coupled with large-scale expenditures under the Jal Jeevan Mission and Atal Jal Dhara projects, has raised questions about the effectiveness of water supply initiatives in the city.
With mounting frustration and increasing public anger over the administration’s inaction, many fear that if the crisis persists in urban areas, the situation in rural regions will be even more dire.
Residents are now urging immediate governmental intervention to resolve the issue before the crisis escalates further.
