Agartala, 29th June 2024:  In a show of collective frustration, residents of Dakshin Padmabil Gram Panchayat located under the Panisagar sub-division took to the streets on Saturday blocking a major road. Their demands are immediate repair and renovation of the deteriorating road infrastructure. As a result of the blockade, traffic has been disrupted inconveniencing commuters and travelers.

The affected road stretches approximately 7 kilometres connecting South Padmabil Duganga Ambika Kunda to the Assam-Agartala National Highway. Unfortunately, this vital route has fallen into disrepair over the past decade due to a lack of maintenance. The consequences have been dire for the approximately two thousand families residing in the area. Additionally, the road serves as a crucial link for two schools, two markets, a panchayat office, an SPO camp and a sub-health center.

Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the road’s poor condition, especially during the monsoon season when students face difficulties reaching school. Despite their appeals, the local Gram Panchayat office remained unresponsive. Frustrated by the lack of action, community members decided to stage a road blockade today, effectively bringing traffic to a standstill.

Promptly informed of the situation, Panisagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate rushed to the site and engaged with the protesters. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sushanta Debbarma assured the residents that he would personally take the initiative to repair the road within the next 15 days. He pledged to communicate with higher authorities to expedite the necessary measures. Encouraged by this commitment, the residents lifted the blockade, hoping for swift action to alleviate their longstanding road woes.
