Agartala, 5th October 2026 : Tension surfaced at Maharani in Salema Block on Monday as CPI(M) supporters and counting agents blocked the Ambassa-Kamalpur road, protesting the alleged forcible eviction of party representatives from the counting centre at Maharani English Medium High School.
According to the protesters, CPI(M) counting agents reached the centre early in the morning to perform their assigned duties but were allegedly intercepted on the way by supporters of Tipra Motha. They claimed that their identity cards were snatched and several representatives were physically assaulted before being prevented from entering the counting venue.
One of the protesters said they were compelled to block the road to demand a fair and transparent counting process. He said the blockade would continue until adequate arrangements were made to ensure that all authorised counting agents could participate in the process.
Another protester alleged that a group of Tipra Motha supporters forcibly removed CPI(M) representatives from the Maharani High School premises and tore their identity cards. He further claimed that representatives of BJP and independent candidates were also assaulted.
The protesters demanded that they be allowed to return to the counting hall and that security arrangements be made to ensure their safe return home after the counting concludes. The Assistant Returning Officer was reportedly present at the spot during the protest.
Meanwhile, another incident was reported involving a vehicle carrying poll personnel. According to allegations, a group of miscreants attacked and vandalised a vehicle carrying election workers while it was travelling towards Kathalia on its way to the counting centre.
The poll personnel reportedly escaped injury, although the vehicle was badly damaged in the attack. The staff members said they had arrived at Jolibari High School for election duty when the incident occurred.
