Agartala, February 15: The Khowai branch of All Adivasi Association of Tripura (AAAT) staged a road blockade on the Khowai-Agartala road in front of Dhalabil Bagan School on Thursday, demanding the arrest of the culprits who attacked a scooty rider on February 7 last.
According to the blockaders, Rajesh Munda, a resident of Khowai Cherma area, was riding his scooty on the Khowai Kamalpur road when he collided with a TomTom (a local three-wheeler vehicle) around 6 pm on February 7. He sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital.
However, while he was being treated, a group of miscreants from the same area arrived at the hospital and assaulted him brutally, leaving him in a critical condition. The miscreants also threatened him and his family members with dire consequences if they reported the matter to the police.
The AAAT activists alleged that the police have failed to take any action against the attackers, despite a complaint being lodged at the Khowai police station. They claimed that the police have not even registered an FIR in the case, let alone identify or arrest the accused.
To protest against the police apathy and negligence, the AAAT supporters blocked the Khowai-Agartala road from 11 am to 12 pm on Thursday, disrupting the traffic movement on both sides of the road. They raised slogans against the police and the state government and demanded justice for Rajesh Munda.
The blockade was lifted after the police officials reached the spot and assured the protestors that they would arrest the culprits within 24 hours. The AAAT leaders warned that they would resume their agitation if the police failed to keep their promise.
The AAAT is a tribal organization that works for the welfare and rights of the Adivasi community in Tripura. The organization has been vocal about the issues of land rights, education, health, and employment of the Adivasis in the state.
