Agartala, 4th September 2025: Just eight months after a major road repair project was completed in the Kamraj Khan Colony area adjacent to Charilam and Cheshurimai Gram Panchayats and Bashtali village, the newly laid road has deteriorated dramatically, triggering anger among local residents.
The road, repaired by the Bishramganj Public Works Department (PWD), has lost its asphalt surface entirely. Loose gravel and broken stones now litter the stretch, making it hazardous for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles alike. Villagers report frequent accidents and daily inconvenience due to the poor condition.
Locals allege that the repair work was of extremely poor quality, accusing PWD engineers and contractors of collusion and financial misappropriation. According to residents, the road was superficially patched using low-grade materials small pebbles and sand treated with fire without proper layering or binding. As a result, the surface began to disintegrate within weeks.
“The road was never meant to last. It was a showpiece project done just to tick boxes,” said one resident, echoing widespread frustration.
Villagers claim that similar issues plague other roads repaired under the Bishramganj PWD’s jurisdiction. Allegations include contractors securing projects through bribes and kickbacks, followed by substandard execution to recover costs. Supervising officers and officials are also accused of demanding “cut money,” forcing contractors to compromise on quality to meet financial demands.
With daily life disrupted and safety compromised, residents are now demanding urgent re-repair of the road and a formal investigation into the alleged corruption. Local leaders have called for transparency in future infrastructure projects and accountability for those responsible.
