Agartala, 15th January 2025 : Sanitation workers of Shantirbazar District Hospital have launched a strike, demanding fair wages and the immediate payment of their arrears. The workers, who play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the hospital, have been without salaries for the last three months.
According to one of the protesting workers, the current salary for sanitation workers is 11,000 taka. However, the contractor responsible for their payment has repeatedly delayed their salaries, citing various excuses. Despite assurances that the arrears would be cleared within a week, the workers are yet to receive their due payments.
“Many of us are struggling to meet basic expenses. We cannot survive without our salaries,” said one of the sanitation workers on strike.
The strike has brought sanitation services at the hospital to a halt, causing inconvenience to patients, staff, and visitors. The workers have vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met.
Hospital authorities have acknowledged the strike and are reportedly in discussions with the contractor to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, patients and their families have expressed concern over the disruption of services, urging for a swift resolution to the impasse.
As the strike enters its first day, the workers remain firm in their demand for immediate action to address their financial difficulties and ensure timely payment of their wages in the future.
