Agartala, 29th August 2026: The State Election Commission (SEC) is scheduled to announce the date for the much-awaited Village Committee elections in Tripura on August 31, sources said.
The announcement is expected to formally set the electoral process in motion for the Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), with political parties preparing for an intense electoral battle.
The SEC has already stepped up preparations for the elections. Earlier this week, the Commission conducted a training workshop for Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Additional BDOs, who are expected to serve as Returning Officers. The officials were briefed on election rules, enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, scrutiny of nominations, counting procedures and other aspects of the electoral process.
The Commission has also indicated that an all-party meeting will be convened shortly to discuss various issues related to the polls. At the same time, consultations with Tripura Police are being held to assess the law-and-order situation and identify sensitive and hyper-sensitive areas. A multi-layered security arrangement is expected to be put in place based on the assessment.
The Village Committee elections have assumed considerable political significance as the polls are being held after a prolonged gap. The SEC had earlier completed the process of preparing and publishing the electoral rolls for the Village Committee constituencies.
With the expected announcement on August 31, political parties are likely to intensify candidate selection, alliance discussions and grassroots-level campaigning across the ADC areas.
The formal notification by the SEC is expected to provide clarity on the dates for filing nominations, scrutiny, withdrawal, polling and counting.
