Secretary’s absence cripples Durgapur Panchayat services

Agartala, 17th  March 2026 : Villagers under the Durgapur Gram Panchayat are facing mounting difficulties due to the repeated absence of the appointed Panchayat Secretary. Despite the presence of a Panchayat office meant to serve rural residents, locals allege that the facility remains locked most of the time, leaving them deprived of essential services.

For months, the Panchayat has been grappling with staff shortages. There is no RPM or GRS, and even the acting secretary, Abhijit Majumdar, is reportedly unavailable on most days. Villagers claim that Majumdar often arrives at the office only to lock it again, citing work at the block office. As a result, residents seeking birth and death certificates or other daily documents are forced to return empty-handed.

Community members say the problem has persisted for nearly six months, yet no corrective action has been taken. Panchayat leaders themselves admit they are unable to provide clear answers regarding the secretary’s whereabouts. According to villagers, whenever questioned, Majumdar insists he is at the block office, though many doubt the claim.

The prolonged disruption has left residents frustrated, prompting them to approach the media to demand immediate intervention. They argue that the Panchayat office, established for public convenience, has become symbolic rather than functional, and they want accountability restored.
