Secretary’s absence sparks protest in North Tripura Panchayat, Village Pradhan locks BDO office

Agartala, 20th August 2025:    A protest took place in South Hurua Gram Panchayat under Kalachhara Block today, as Panchayat Pradhan Satyabrata Das locked the BDO office in protest against the prolonged absence of the Panchayat Secretary. The incident has stirred widespread concern among local residents, who accuse the administration of negligence and mismanagement.

According to sources, RPM Biplab Das was recently transferred from North Hurua to take charge as Secretary of South Hurua Gram Panchayat. However, despite the official posting, Das has reportedly failed to assume his responsibilities. Instead, he has been frequently seen spending time in the chamber of BDO Narayan Debnath, allegedly engaging in informal gatherings rather than administrative duties.

Speaking to reporters, Pradhan Satyabrata Das expressed frustration over the lack of action despite multiple complaints to the BDO. “Villagers come to the Panchayat office daily for essential services, but the absence of the Secretary has left them helpless. Their anger is directed at me, while the administration remains silent,” Das said.

The situation escalated on Wednesday morning when Das, citing administrative apathy, locked the BDO office at around 11 a.m. as a symbolic act of protest. A meeting was later convened with the BDO, Pradhan, and Panchayat members, resulting in a temporary resolution. However, the core issue remains unresolved.

The incident has reignited public debate over the state of governance in the region. Critics question whether this reflects the “good governance” promised by the ruling BJP. “When government offices turn into social lounges and elected representatives are forced to lock doors to be heard, it exposes deep-rooted administrative failure,” said one local resident.

Villagers rely on the Panchayat for daily access to government services. The repeated absence of the Secretary, they argue, is a clear sign of systemic neglect. The gap between the government’s development claims and ground realities appears to be widening.

The pressing question now is: When will RPM Biplab Das formally take charge of South Hurua Gram Panchayat? Or will he continue to evade responsibility under political protection, leaving villagers to bear the brunt of bureaucratic indifference?
