Agartala, 8th August 2025:   Chaos erupted in Karbook last night as Krishna Banik alias Mana, a former convenor of the ruling party’s Shakti Kendra and a self-styled nationalist leader was arrested following allegations of assault and public disorder. Residents of the area, long troubled by Banik’s alleged nightly drunken behavior lodged a formal complaint with Nutan Bazar Police Station prompting swift police action.

Eyewitnesses said that Banik physically assaulted a media person who had arrived at the scene to report on the unrest. The media person was also subjected to vulgar abuse. Concerned by the escalating tension, locals alerted the Nutan Bazar police, leading Sub-Inspector Bikram Debbarma to intervene with a police team.

Upon arrival, Banik reportedly became aggressive issuing threats against the police and resisting arrest. Sub-Inspector Debbarma eventually subdued him and transported him to the station. However, Banik continued his tirade at the police station, allegedly threatening to have officers transferred and claiming that political figures including an MLA and the mandal president would secure his release.

He was released on personal bail the following morning, reportedly after complaining about mosquito bites during his detention.

The Amarpur sub-divisional committee of the Tripura Working Journalists Association issued a strong condemnation demanding a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for Banik. Journalists across the sub-division have expressed solidarity and concern over the growing threats to press freedom in the sub-division.
