Agartala, 23rd March 2024:   Tripura state has emerged as a hub for human trafficking, with nefarious activities continuing despite recent raids by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The illicit trade, fueled by hefty sums of money, persists across the border, with frequent detentions of Bangladeshi individuals at Agartala railway station painting a grim picture of the situation.

In a recent development, two individuals were apprehended on Friday, adding to the growing list of arrests. On Saturday, seven Bangladeshis attempted to flee to Chennai via the Kanchenjunga Express from Agartala. Two among them resorted to disguising themselves as women in a bid to evade authorities. However, their efforts were thwarted during a routine police search, leading to their detention and subsequent interrogation.

Investigations revealed that the group had crossed the border into India on the same day, opting to travel to Chennai via Kanchenjunga Express from Calcutta. Among those arrested were identified as Yasin Howladar (44), Mohammad Hossain (20), Shukur Ali Howladar (19), Farzena Akhtar (20), Rumi Begum (21), and Nayan Hossain (25). The authorities have commenced intensive interrogations to unearth further details, with additional information expected to emerge in due course.

Despite the arrests, the involvement of a significant network of brokers remains evident, posing a challenge for law enforcement agencies. The inability to apprehend these brokers underscores the complexities surrounding the issue. Moreover, authorities remain puzzled over the motives behind the individuals’ attempts to disguise themselves as women, particularly during the ongoing Lok Sabha election process.
