Agartala, 30th August 2024: Heavy rains from August 19 to 22 have caused severe flooding across Tripura, resulting in extensive damage to agricultural lands, homes, and government property. In response, a central monitoring team was dispatched to the state following a request from the Chief Minister to the central government. The team has been surveying the extent of the damage since Thursday, focusing on various districts, including Khowai.
On Friday, the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) began their assessment in the flood-affected areas of Khowai district at 10 am. The team led by Khowai District Magistrate Chandni Chandan, Additional District Magistrate Abhijit Chakraborty, and Senior Deputy Magistrate Parimal Majumdar, visited several severely impacted areas.
The central team, comprising Shashank Bhushan, PK Meena, and Ramesh Kumar, started their visit at Khowai Dak Bunglow. From there, they proceeded to the Jamira area of Khowai West Sonata. During their visit, they interacted with affected families to understand the extent of their losses. “The devastation here is heart-wrenching. Families have lost their homes and livelihoods,” said Shashank Bhushan, a member of the central team.
The team then moved to the Chebri area, where they inspected various affected sites, including ponds and agricultural lands. They highlighted the significant losses faced by local fishermen and farmers. “The floods have wiped out entire fish stocks and destroyed crops. The impact on the local economy is severe,” noted PK Meena.
Later, the team visited the Ratia area of Dakshin Durgapur Panchayat under Kalyanpur block, followed by Kamalnagar area, also under Kalyanpur block. Here, they observed the damage to 70 hectares of land, affecting around 2,000 residents. “The scale of destruction is immense. Many people are struggling to rebuild their lives,” remarked Ramesh Kumar.
An official from the central observation team mentioned that they had visited Gomati district on Thursday. “The damage in Khowai district is extensive. We will compile a detailed report and submit it to the Tripura government and the central ministry,” the official stated.
The central team’s visit underscores the urgent need for relief and rehabilitation efforts in the flood-affected regions of Tripura. The state government, along with central authorities, is expected to expedite aid to support the affected communities in their recovery.
