Agartala, 18th May 2025: In a major push to upgrade urban infrastructure, Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL) has launched extensive drainage and road development works across the city, aiming to complete the project before the monsoon season sets in.
Speaking to the media during an inspection of ongoing works, Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Chief Executive Officer of ASCL, said the project involves the construction of 23 kilometers of roads and 46 kilometers of scientifically-designed drainage systems throughout Agartala.
“Previously, the city lacked a proper drainage network. Many areas had only kutcha drains, while others had unscientifically built systems. We are now developing a comprehensive and technically sound drainage infrastructure,” Dr. Shailesh said.
Launched in February, the project is on a fast track with a deadline set ahead of the upcoming rains. Roads where the drainage level is currently higher than the carriageway will also be elevated to prevent waterlogging, he added.
Alongside road and drainage development, the ASCL is also working to underground electric lines and water supply systems. This initiative is aimed at improving urban aesthetics and ensuring long-term resilience.
Dr. Shailesh clarified that the entire project is being executed without the need for land acquisition, thus minimizing inconvenience to local residents.
The initiative is part of the broader Agartala Smart City Mission, which seeks to transform the Tripura capital into a modern, sustainable, and livable urban center.
