Agartala, 29th October 2024:   Agartala’s traffic situation has worsened significantly, with residents experiencing daily traffic jams from 8 am to 10 pm on the busiest roads. The decline in service has been particularly evident despite Agartala’s designation as a Smart City. The Smart City Mission, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 25, 2015, aimed to improve the quality of life in 100 cities, including Agartala, by reducing traffic congestion through modern traffic signal systems.

Despite the installation of traffic signals at intersections with public funds, many signals remain non-functional. As a result, TSR and traffic personnel manually manage traffic, often leading to confusion and massive jams.

“The traffic situation in Agartala is dire,” commented a frustrated resident. “We were promised a Smart City, but the current state of our traffic management is anything but smart.”

During a visit to the motor stand area on Tuesday, media observed TSR workers wearing traffic jackets but creating a chaotic situation while performing their duties. One traffic worker was seen sitting in his booth, absorbed in his mobile phone. He only sprang into action upon noticing the media cameras, putting on his hat and resuming his responsibilities.

Car drivers and pedestrians alike are increasingly frustrated with the inability to reach their destinations on time. With the Smart City Mission’s expected completion date approaching on March 31, 2025, residents are left questioning whether the city can truly becomesmart under the current administrative staff.
