Snan yatra of Lord Jagannath celebrated with religious fervour across Tripura

Date:

Agartala, 29th June 2026:   The sacred Snan Yatra, or the Grand Bathing Festival of Lord Jagannath, was celebrated across Tripura on Monday with traditional rituals, devotional fervour and large gatherings of devotees. Special prayers, Vedic chanting and religious ceremonies marked the occasion at Jagannath temples throughout the state, including the Jagannath Temple and ISKCON Temple in Agartala.

Devotees began arriving at the temples early in the morning to witness the annual ritual. As per tradition, temple sevayats first offered Pushpanjali to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balarama and Goddess Subhadra before escorting the deities to the ceremonial bathing altar. Following the Maha Snan, the deities were adorned in the distinctive Hati Besha (elephant attire), drawing enthusiastic participation from worshippers.

According to Hindu belief, Snan Yatra is the only day in the year when Lord Jagannath, accompanied by his siblings, receives the ceremonial bath in public. The day is also observed as the Lord’s appearance day. Religious texts state that the festival was first organised by King Indradyumna and Queen Gundicha.

Following the bathing ritual, Lord Jagannath is believed to fall ill and remains in the Anasar chamber for 15 days, during which devotees are unable to have darshan. The Lord will reappear during the Naba-Yauvana ceremony before the annual Rath Yatra on July 16. Preparations for the grand chariot festival are already underway across the state.
