Sonamura Baranarayan Residents Demand Urgent Road Repair Amid River Erosion Threat

Agartala, 10th August 2025:  Frustration is mounting in the Sonamura Baranarayan area as locals allege that the government has failed to repair the only road in the region despite repeated appeals spanning two years. The road, which was submerged in the Gomati river during the devastating 2024 floods, remains in a broken and perilous condition, forcing residents to travel at risk to their lives.

According to locals, a tender worth Rs 1 crore 74 lakh 25 thousand 785 was sanctioned for the repair of the riverside road and to prevent further erosion. However, despite a contractor being awarded the work, no progress has been made on the ground.

“In the past two years, several leaders and ministers have visited the site, but we are still waiting for real action,” a resident said. The absence of protective boulders has worsened the situation, leading to the submergence of four to five houses along the Gomati’s banks over the past two years.

After continuous protests and persistent media coverage, the Water Resources Department finally issued the tender to address river erosion. Initially, residents saw this as a ray of hope, but the lack of visible work has reignited concerns that the project may remain only on paper.

Locals fear that if the work does not begin immediately, the entire road may be swallowed by the river, cutting off vital connectivity. They have once again urged the authorities to take immediate steps, warning that any further delay could result in a major accident.
