Agartala, 20th March 2026:    Families of Special Police Officers (SPOs) in Unakoti district staged a demonstration today, pressing for their long-standing demands and submitting a 10-point memorandum to the Director General of Police through District Superintendent Sudhambika R. The deputation was handed over around noon by a three-member delegation led by Reshmi Debbarma, representing nearly 100 family members who gathered in support.

Currently, about 450 SPOs are serving in Unakoti district. Families allege that despite years of service under uncertain and irregular conditions, SPOs lack adequate social and financial security. They urged immediate government intervention to address the situation.

The 10-point charter of demands includes: Regularization of SPO jobs, Implementation of the National Pension System (NPS), Full benefits for families in case of death during service, Introduction of dress, ration, rifle, and medical allowances, Payment of 13 months’ salary, Provision of Dearness Allowance (DA) and Travel Allowance (TA), and Assurance of insurance benefits.

Reshmi Debbarma, speaking on behalf of the families, said: “SPOs risk their lives daily to maintain law and order, yet their rightful benefits remain unfulfilled. As families, we have endured neglect for years. Today, we are compelled to raise our voices and seek justice.”

Participants emphasized that despite SPOs’ contributions, their financial security and future remain deeply uncertain, making life increasingly difficult. The protest has drawn significant attention locally, bringing long-simmering grievances to the forefront. Families expressed hope that the administration will act swiftly and sympathetically to fulfill their demands.
