SSA Teachers Demand Regularisation; Warn of Gherao if SLP Not Withdrawn

Agartala, 15th February 2026:  The Tripura SSA Teachers Association today has urged the state government to withdraw its Special Leave Petition (SLP) from the Supreme Court of India and press for the regularisation of teachers under the Samagra Shiksha scheme.

Addressing a press conference at the Agartala Press Club on Sunday, Association president Niloy Kanti Saha said that the prolonged financial and professional uncertainty faced by Samagra Shiksha teachers has reached a critical stage.

He stated that teachers in the state have been grappling with multiple issues related to salary, job security and retirement benefits for several years. “After 2017, salaries and allowances remained virtually stagnant for nearly four years. Unlike regular government employees, we were not granted the benefits of the Seventh Pay Commission, dearness allowance (DA), or annual increments,” he said.

Although the state government introduced a regularisation scheme following a High Court directive in 2021, Saha alleged that teachers are still receiving Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000 less per month compared to their regular counterparts. Over the past eight years, an average teacher has suffered financial losses ranging between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh, he claimed.

The Association further pointed out that the financial condition of many teachers has become extremely fragile. “In many cases, salaries are exhausted by the middle of the month, and payments are often delayed,” Saha added. He also highlighted the plight of nearly 1,000 teachers who have already retired but are yet to receive any pension benefits.

According to the Association, over 200 teachers have died while in service during this prolonged period of uncertainty. The organisation alleged that sustained financial hardship, mental stress and insecurity about the future have taken a severe toll on educators and their families, many of whom are now facing acute distress.

The Association has set a deadline of March 3–4 for the state government to withdraw the SLP from the Supreme Court. Failing this, the teachers have warned that they will launch a direct agitation without seeking further permission and gherao the office of the Director of Samagra Shiksha, bringing what they termed the government’s “failure” before the public.

The press conference was also attended by the Association’s secretary, Shailendra Debbarma, along with other members of the organisation.
