Agartala, 10th August 2026 : Students of Samrendraganj Upper Primary School under the Poyangbari RD Block in Sabroom staged a road blockade on Monday morning, locking the school gate to press for a number of long-pending demands. Local parents also joined the protest.
The protesters’ key demands include the appointment of four teachers for the primary section, recruitment of a local teacher, provision of an LPG gas connection for cooking the Mid-Day Meal, and appointment of two ayahs to look after students of the nursery section.
Parents alleged that the shortage of teachers and support staff has adversely affected regular academic activities as well as the proper care of young children at the school. They said that despite repeated appeals to the authorities for a long time, no effective steps had been taken to resolve the issues.
Left with no other option, the students and parents decided to launch a joint protest, they said.
The road blockade began at around 7 am, with the school gate being locked by the protesters. The agitation disrupted vehicular movement in the area and caused inconvenience to commuters.
Administrative officials eventually reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters. Following assurances from the administration that the issues would be looked into, the blockade was withdrawn.
The protesters, however, demanded that the problems faced by the school be resolved at the earliest.
