Sudhanghus’s Social Media Post Sparks Political Controversy; LoP Seeks Governor’s Intervention

Agartala, 18th March 2025:   A political storm has erupted in Tripura after a social media post by SC Welfare Minister Sudhangsu Das drew sharp criticism from the opposition. Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has written to Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, urging immediate action against the Minister for allegedly making derogatory and communal remarks that could threaten social harmony.

In his letter, Chaudhury accused Das of using his official Facebook page to propagate divisive content, equating opposition political parties with historical religious persecution. The post, which referred to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s rule and linked contemporary political parties with “Islamic brutality” and “barbarism,” has sparked a heated debate on political rhetoric and communal sensitivity.

Calling Das’s remarks “seriously objectionable” and “dangerous for democratic values,” Chaudhury questioned whether individuals with such views should hold positions of power in a secular democracy. He argued that the Minister’s repeated use of such rhetoric demonstrated a pattern of behavior that could undermine Tripura’s social fabric.

“This is not the first time that Minister Das has made such abominable statements on social media,” Chaudhury alleged. “His repeated posts reflect a mindset that is unconstitutional and dangerous for communal harmony.”

The controversy has further escalated tensions between the ruling and opposition parties, with the Left and Congress leaders accusing the BJP-led government of fostering a divisive political environment. While there has been no official response from the Minister or the state government, opposition parties have demanded strict action, including the removal of Das from the Cabinet.

Political analysts believe this incident could have larger implications in Tripura’s political landscape, especially with upcoming elections on the horizon. The incident underscores the growing friction between parties over the use of social media as a political battleground and the fine line between free speech and hate speech.

As the issue gains traction, all eyes are now on the Governor’s response and the BJP leadership’s stance on the matter, with citizens closely watching how the state navigates the delicate balance of governance and communal harmony.
