Sudhangshu Das backs Birajit Sinha on Kailashahar Dam issue; CM Dr Manik Saha vows review

Agartala, 15th January 2025:   In a zero-hour discussion held on the third day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Congress MLA Birajit Sinha expressed concerns about the construction of dams in Kailashahar. “There are two dams in Kailashahar, one on the Indian side and another on the Bangladesh side. In the neighbouring country, construction of a bigger dam has already started, which will have a tremendous impact if heavy rainfall occurs in Kailashahar,” Sinha highlighted. He further mentioned that a 7 km plot of land had been acquired from Rangauti Gram Panchayat to Kailashahar town for constructing a dam. “Both dams were being constructed competitively. We held an administrative meeting to join the two dams within 50 feet. However, we now see a bigger dam being constructed on the Bangladesh side, while the forty-year-old dam on the Indian side remains in a dire state without any maintenance. I appeal to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to set up an inquiry regarding this dam,” Sinha urged.

In response, CM Dr. Saha assured that he would look into the matter positively. ARD, Fisheries, and SC Minister Sudhangshu Das, representing the Fatikroy assembly constituency, also raised his concerns. “As I hail from the same district, Unakoti, the issue raised by MLA Sinha is immensely relevant. I appeal to CM Dr. Saha to address this matter as it involves two nations. During the recent flood, we managed to avoid destruction as the water flow went through the Bangladesh side. This is a recurring problem. Additionally, a portion of the Indo-Bangla border remains unfenced, allowing Bangladesh citizens to enter Indian territory to steal cattle, smuggle goods, and engage in illegal activities. I urge the CM to look into this matter significantly,” Das emphasized.

CM Dr. Saha reiterated his commitment to addressing the issue. “MLA Sinha and Minister Das have raised this issue. Both hail from neighboring constituencies in the same district. We have previously discussed and reviewed water resources, including the 12 rivers flowing through Tripura. I have visited the constituencies of Kailashahar and Fatikroy several times and have sent photographs to the central ministry for a permanent solution. This is an international matter,” Dr. Saha concluded.
