Agartala, 15th January 2025: Shibbari Senior Basic School in Kailashahar, located in the Reang Basti area of Unakoti ADC Village under the Gournagar block, has been facing severe issues with teacher attendance and school operations. Reang Basti, a remote village situated on a high hill, is about 15 kilometers away from the main city of Kailashahar. The village has around one and a half hundred families from the Reang community, with approximately 95 percent belonging to BPL families.
65-year-old Swadhinla Reang, a senior citizen of the village, expressed his concerns: “The Shibbari Senior Basic Government School was established in 1986. It used to be very convenient for the boys and girls of the village to study here. However, the school has been in a bad condition for the last few years. There is no education in the school because teachers do not come regularly. Even when they do come, they arrive around 11:30 and leave by 12:30. The school has not provided mid-day meals for almost a year. As a result, parents have been sending their children to the government school in the neighboring village.”
The school’s infrastructure has also deteriorated, with damaged roof tiles and missing classroom doors. Local news reporters visited the school today at 1:30 pm and found it locked. Speaking with villagers, including Swadhinla Reang, highlighted the school’s poor condition.
Kailashahar School Inspector Radhan Tripura addressed the issue, stating, “The school’s headmaster Tem Bahadur Thappa and the teachers have been reprimanded twice in the past year for irregular attendance. The school currently has 62 students, including twenty-seven boys and thirty-five girls, and five teachers. The department provides rice and dal for mid-day meals every month. Appropriate action will be taken against the school’s teachers soon, and steps will be taken to keep the school open every day and restore the learning environment.”
