Agartala, 25th August 2026 : Police have intensified their crackdown on theft and property-related crimes across Agartala, arresting six alleged habitual thieves in separate operations conducted by West Agartala, NCC and Amtali police stations.
According to police, personnel from West Agartala and NCC police stations arrested four alleged thieves following investigations into several theft-related cases. The West Agartala police launched an investigation after a group of thieves allegedly stole various items and a scooty from the grocery shop of Mridul Modak in the Radhanagar area.
Following a complaint, police formed a special team and arrested an alleged habitual thief from the Bitterban area. During interrogation, two more suspects were arrested. Police subsequently recovered the stolen articles along with the scooty bearing registration number *TR 01 AB 9400* from the Goala slum area.
Meanwhile, NCC police arrested another alleged notorious thief, identified as *Bishwanath Debnath*, from the Lichubagan area based on intelligence inputs. Police said Debnath is allegedly involved in several theft cases in Agartala and is suspected of being involved in smuggling stolen motorcycles out of the city through Kunaban.
Police said a case had been registered at the station a few days ago in connection with a theft-related incident, following which five persons were arrested. The latest arrest is believed to be that of another accused in the case. An unregistered motorcycle and a scooty were also recovered from his possession. Police suspect that the scooty may have been stolen from the airport area, although the accused reportedly claimed that it belonged to a close relative.
In a separate operation in the Amtali police station area two more alleged notorious thieves were arrested late Monday night based on intelligence information. The arrests followed an investigation into a recent theft at the residence of Haridas Sutradhar.
Police said regular mobile patrols, surveillance and special operations against habitual criminals are continuing across the Amtali area. During the investigation into the theft case, police gathered information with the assistance of local residents and identified the two suspects before arresting them.
The two accused are scheduled to be produced before a court on Tuesday, where police are expected to seek their remand for further interrogation. Police sources said the names of the suspects also emerged during the questioning of some previously arrested thieves.
Police are simultaneously reviewing old unsolved theft cases in the Amtali area, apart from investigating recent incidents. Officials said efforts are underway to identify links between habitual offenders and multiple property-related crimes.
Regarding allegations of a rise in thefts in the area, a police officer said adequate patrolling and surveillance are being maintained and that persons involved in property-related offences are being arrested regularly. Raids are also being conducted against suspects involved in theft and other crimes in neighbouring areas.
Police have, however, withheld details regarding some of the recovered items and their locations in the interest of the ongoing investigation. Officials said further details would be disclosed as the investigations progress.
With the latest arrests, police believe that further interrogation of the accused could lead to the identification and arrest of more persons allegedly involved in theft networks operating across Agartala.
