Agartala, 26th August 2026: Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday launched a sharp political attack on the BJP, accusing the ruling party of undermining democratic values and creating an atmosphere of political intimidation in the state.
Chaudhury made the remarks while visiting a CPI(M) party office at Jogendranagar in Agartala, which the party alleged was vandalised by BJP workers on Monday. He said the incident was part of a broader pattern of attacks allegedly targeting CPI(M) offices and workers.
According to Chaudhury, the CPI(M) has decided to maintain a detailed record of such incidents, including alleged attacks on party offices and members.
“The BJP talks about democracy, but its actions tell a different story. Democracy means allowing political opponents to function freely. Attacking party offices and workers is a direct attack on democratic politics,” Chaudhury said.
Taking aim at the BJP-led government, he also raised issues concerning electricity tariffs, alleged misuse of public funds and what he described as unfulfilled promises.
He claimed that growing public dissatisfaction over these issues was visible across the state, including among sections of BJP supporters on social media.
“People are raising questions about the government’s policies. Instead of addressing these issues, the government is making new promises. But people will judge the government by its actions, not by political slogans,” he said.
Chaudhury also criticised the BJP for holding a programme near the CPI(M) office following the alleged vandalism, describing it as an example of the growing political confrontation in the state.
He alleged that the BJP was attempting to dominate political space through intimidation rather than democratic competition.“If anyone can prove that the CPI(M) initiated the attack, let them come forward with evidence. We are ready to accept the truth. But baseless allegations cannot be used to justify attacks on our offices,” he said.
The CPI(M) leader further claimed that the party office had been targeted repeatedly and said the party would continue documenting every incident.
“I do not know what records the police will maintain, but we are maintaining our own diary. Every attack, every incident and every act of political violence will be recorded,” he said.
Issuing a strong political warning, Chaudhury said those allegedly involved in attacks against CPI(M) workers and party offices would eventually have to face the consequences of their actions.
“No one will be spared. Prasad is being prepared for them as well,” he said, using the phrase as a political warning to those he accused of carrying out attacks.
The remarks are likely to further intensify the ongoing political confrontation between the CPI(M) and the ruling BJP in Tripura.
