Agartala, 16th July 2025:  In a significant step towards upgrading fisheries infrastructure in Tripura, the state government has announced the construction of a modern fish market at Maharajganj Bazar in Agartala—the state’s largest market—at an estimated cost of ₹35 crore.

Tripura Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das made the announcement on Wednesday during an inspection of the existing fish market at Maharajganj.Speaking to reporters, Minister Das said, “A majority of the fish traders here belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. Considering their welfare, the SC Welfare Department has undertaken this ambitious project to build a state-of-the-art fish market with improved hygiene and modern facilities.”

He informed that ₹7 crore has already been sanctioned for the project. The proposed complex will be a G+2 (three-storey) structure and will address persistent issues like poor drainage, lack of cleanliness, and space shortages in the current setup.“Both vendors and consumers often suffer due to the unhygienic conditions and waterlogging in traditional markets. This project aims to eliminate these problems and provide an organized, clean, and efficient space for fish trading,” the minister added.

The site has already been surveyed, and layout planning for the new market is underway. Once completed, the facility is expected to revolutionize fish trading in the city.

In addition to the Maharajganj initiative, Minister Das also revealed plans to establish several apex centers across Tripura to facilitate the distribution and sale of fish.“We want to ensure that fish harvested from the Dumbur reservoir is marketed and consumed within the state. These apex centers will help make that possible,” he said. The initiative is expected to improve the livelihoods of local fish traders while ensuring urban consumers have better access to fresh fish in hygienic conditions.
