Suspected gold bangles worth Rs 70 lakh detected at Agartala Airport, CISF informs

Date:

Agartala, 16th September 2026 : Five bangles suspected to be made of gold, weighing around 500 grams and estimated to be worth nearly Rs 70 lakh, were detected by CISF personnel at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala on Tuesday. Silver jewellery weighing approximately 800 grams and valued at around Rs 2 lakh was also recovered from the same passenger.

The incident occurred when a woman passenger arrived at the airport at around 9.35 am for pre-embarkation security screening before boarding an IndiGo flight to Kolkata. During baggage screening, CISF personnel noticed an unusual image suggesting the presence of heavy metal and referred the baggage for physical inspection.

The physical check resulted in the recovery of three bangles suspected to be gold from the baggage. Security personnel subsequently recovered two more suspected gold bangles during the frisking of the passenger.

CISF officials immediately informed the Customs authorities about the recovery. During questioning, the passenger reportedly failed to produce valid documents supporting possession of the suspected gold.

According to officials, the passenger stated that the suspected gold had been brought from across the border and was being taken to Kolkata for the purpose of making jewellery.

Customs officials later arrived at the scene and, at around 12.45 pm, seized the five suspected gold bangles along with the silver jewellery. Further action has been initiated by the Customs authorities.

The CISF said the detection was made during routine security screening at the airport. The valuation and other details concerning the suspected gold are subject to further examination by the Customs authorities.
