Agartala, 1st August 2025 : A suspicious drone was recovered from a paddy field near the Lankamura border area along the Indo-Bangladesh international boundary in Tripura, triggering a flurry of concern among security agencies. The incident took place on the same day that Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, Md. Riaz Hamidullah visited the Agartala Integrated Check Post raising further questions about the drone’s origin and intent.
According to reports, the drone was first spotted by local children playing in the field, who alerted nearby residents. The Border Security Force (BSF) was subsequently informed and swiftly reached the location to recover the device.
“The drone was found lying in a paddy field near the international border. It appears to be a Chinese-made drone equipped with a high-powered camera. We suspect it was being used for surveillance. The timing of its recovery so close to Agartala Airport and just ahead of Independence Day is extremely significant and raises several red flags. We are not taking any chances,” said a senior BSF official.
The drone was handed over to the Agartala Airport Police Station and has since been sent for forensic examination to determine its specifications and origin more precisely.
Security analysts have voiced concern over the timing of the incident, especially since it coincided with the visit of the Bangladesh High Commissioner to Tripura. “Given the diplomatic presence and upcoming national celebrations, this incident cannot be brushed aside. The circumstances demand a thorough investigation,” said a source familiar with regional security matters.
Adding to the concern are recent intelligence inputs suggesting that operatives linked to Pakistan’s ISI and militant outfits are undergoing training in Bangladesh’s Brahmanbaria district—located close to the Tripura border. While there is no direct link established yet, the recovery of a surveillance-capable drone in the same corridor has intensified security scrutiny.
The BSF and Tripura Police have already ramped up vigilance across border areas, particularly ahead of India’s Independence Day on August 15. “Following this recovery, we have increased patrolling and technical surveillance along sensitive stretches of the border,” the BSF official added.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing and the origin and purpose of the drone will only be clear once forensic and intelligence reports are submitted. Until then, agencies remain on high alert.
