Agartala, 11th January 2026:  A small tea seller in Pramodnagar Village is facing financial distress after receiving an unexpectedly massive electricity bill following the installation of a smart meter. Sahid Mia, a resident of Muslim Para in Ward No. 1, saw his electricity bill jump to a staggering Rs 92,656.

Sahid Mia earns his livelihood by selling tea at Pramodnagar Market, living on a day-to-day income. His family expressed shock and distress at the sudden surge in the bill after the smart meter was installed. The high bill has left Sahid Mia physically unwell and forced the family to cut down on basic meals.

Sahid Mia and his family claim that the bill does not correspond with their daily electricity usage. They have reported the issue to the electricity department and submitted a written appeal to the Electricity Minister, urging a thorough investigation and a fair resolution.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among local residents, who say the abnormal bills following smart meter installations are causing anxiety in the community.
