Agartala, 24th October 2026 : Allegations of neglect by family members have surfaced from Charilam Uttarmura in Tripura, where Sukumar Debnath has claimed that his wife, Sabita Debnath, and other family members are not providing him with proper care, food or support.
According to a video report, Debnath alleged that he has been living in a dilapidated hut under difficult conditions, while the couple, both reportedly government teachers, live in a grand house. The allegations have raised concerns over the living conditions of the elderly man and the treatment he claims to be receiving from his family.
During an interaction with a reporter, Debnath said that his family members did not want to provide him with food. Asked whether his wife looked after him, he replied in the negative. He also claimed that his son did not take care of him.
Describing his living conditions, Debnath said that he could barely breathe inside the broken-down hut, particularly in the heat. He further stated that he prepared his own meals instead of depending on his family for food.
When asked about his wife, he identified her as Sabita Debnath and made further allegations against her. The video also contained references to other individuals, although their alleged roles were not clearly established in the available transcript.
The incident has brought attention to the issue of elderly care and the responsibility of family members to ensure the dignity and well-being of ageing relatives.
