Teliamura: Kalai Para villagers demand urgent road repairs after 30 years of neglect

Agartala, 30th June 2025:   Residents of Kalai Para village under Brahmacherra Panchayat in Teliamura Block have issued a strong appeal to the state government, demanding immediate repairs to a severely damaged road that has remained neglected for over three decades.

The village, comprising around 130 families from the indigenous Kalai community as well as Bengali households, depends entirely on a single road to access nearby areas, including Teliamura town. The road, locals say, is in such poor condition that even essential services like ambulances and fire trucks struggle to reach the area.

“This road has been in a dilapidated condition for more than 30 years. We have been pleading with successive governments, but no one has paid attention,” said a resident, expressing frustration over the long-standing issue.

According to the villagers, the road was last in good condition during the Congress-TUJS coalition government. Since then, they claim, no significant repair work has been done — not under the Left Front government nor during the current BJP administration.

During the monsoon season, the road becomes nearly impassable, making daily life and emergency access difficult. Even during dry weather, commuting remains a challenge. Residents say that students, teachers, farmers, and patients are all affected by the road’s condition, especially with educational institutions located in the area.

“Our village contributes to agriculture in the region and yet we are cut off due to this road. It feels like we’ve been forgotten,” said another villager.

Frustrated with the lack of response from public representatives, the villagers have now taken their demand to the media, urging Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s government to prioritize the road’s repair. They warned that if urgent steps are not taken, they will resort to road blockades and could consider boycotting the upcoming elections in protest.
